Newborn Essentials: My Top Ten Must Haves

November 11, 2019

Newborn Essentials

Happy Monday! It may be late, but I’m still getting this up before midnight so yay!

I normally don’t post so late, but we spent the day pulling out all of our Christmas decorations, and baking sugar cookies so this had to wait. Priorities right?

It was really fun to decorate today because the twins are old enough to understand what’s going on this year so all three girls were super excited (and Gabe cooed happily in his little chair). It was a good day!

But back to today’s post: I thought I would share my newborn essentials with you today because after doing this newborn thing for the third/fourth time (technically I only went through the phase once with the twins’, but it was enough work that I’m counting it twice ha!) I realized that my memory is terrible! I kind of forgot what was useful the first couple of times for us so I wish I would have created this list a few years ago to refer back to.

My point? This will be super helpful for anyone who is having their first child soon, but it’s also helpful for veteran mamas have fallen prey to mama brain.

I said in my diaper bag post last week that I’m a bit of a minimalist when it comes to newborn gear, and this post reinforces that.

This isn’t an exhaustive list by any means because every newborn is different so what you need may vary, but these are the things that I know I would have a really hard time doing without, and that I think would help you as well.

So with all of that said, here are my recommendations:

  • Nursing Cover: So I pretty much use this for everything BUT nursing. I did use it for nursing with Kit, didn’t nurse the twins, and now I just whip ’em out whenever I need to feed him. I just don’t care anymore, and it’s so much easier to feed him without a cover. What I DO use it for? I drape it over his carseat to cut out windchill, and to keep prying hands away when out in public. I use it as a makeshift blanket if I need to lay him down or cover him with an extra layer. I use it as a burp cloth if I don’t have one around (he’s not a super spit up baby). It really is an all in one!
  • Cloth Diapers: These I also don’t use for their intended purpose. I mostly use them for burp cloths (they are super absorbant!), but I also will cut them up into squares and use them as nursing pads. So much cheaper than designated nursing pads, and much more eco friendly than disposable. Genius right?!
  • Sleepers: I love the idea of dressing him in a bunch of cute outfits, but honestly when they’re that small it’s so much more practical to keep them in cozy sleepers. This particular sleeper is the style I love the most. They’re super soft, not that expensive, and easy to get on and off.
  • Boppy Pillow: This I use constantly, and is totally worth the money. Not only do I use it for nursing (totally necessary when you have a big chubby baby like I do!), but I love to use it for tummy time, for laying him down in a pinch, and eventually for sitting up.
  • Pacifiers: these are the pacifiers that I’ve used for all of my kiddos. Ella and Rosie didn’t take to them, but they ended up being thumb suckers. Kit ONLY took these pacifiers so I didn’t even shop around for Gabe… and he loves them.
  • Pacifier Clip: these are SO helpful for leaving the house. Pacifiers tend to fly around and get lost, so attaching them keeps them put (side note, we don’t use these at night or for naps). A simple, but super helpful product.
  • Sleep Sack Swaddle: This is probably my number one must have. These sleep sacks are a lifesaver when it comes to getting your baby to sleep! I have tried to get the hang of swaddling our babies with traditional swaddles, but it’s so dang hard to get right (why is that??). These are super easy to use, and keep them really secure so they don’t bust out as easy. HUGE fan!
  • Milk Catcher Cups: This is a product I just discovered, and I wish I would have had them earlier. I put one in my bras on the side I’m not feeding him on and it catches any letdown that happens while he’s eating. BUT I also used them quite a bit the first couple of weeks when my nipples were chapped and SO sore. I couldn’t stand to have anything touching them so I just put these in my bras and it helped offer relief.
  • Nipple Butter: I swear by this nipple butter. I can’t do lanolin because I have a sensitivity to wool and lanolin. This is just as nourishing, it smells great, and I don’t have to worry about him digesting it since it’s made with good ingredients.
  • Hands Free Breast Pump Cups: I haven’t done a lot of pumping with Gabe… just here and there to build up a little supply, but these are such a lifesaver when it comes to pumping. I pumped exclusively with the twins and these allowed me to do a lot of normal activities while pumping (including driving!).
  • Even Better Cordless Breast Pump With that said, I wanted to include this breast pump even though I don’t own it and probably won’t buy it. It’s not only a hands free breast pump, it’s also cordless… and honestly? This would have been an absolute lifesaver when I was pumping exclusively so I wanted to share it with you guys just in case someone is doing so right now. This may sound crazy, but I think my mental health would have been much better if I would have had this pump because I felt so chained to the pump and unable to do the things I wanted to do for my girls while I was pumping. Having the mobility would have made my life 1000% easier. It would have been totally worth the investment.

That’s it! Not a crazy list right? But all things that I think will really make your life easier if you have a newborn. Did I miss anything? What are your newborn essentials? Share them in the comments below and let’s help each other out!

Instagram post 2198876759426877572_2109301417 We’re at my in laws celebrating Christmas this weekend, and I’m looking forward to some relaxation and Christmas cookies (thanks @wholefoods for providing dairy free cookie options for those of us who hate to bake). In case you missed it yesterday, I posted a new week of outfits! The link is in my bio.
Instagram post 2198237741391614479_2109301417 In case you missed it, I shared my favorite ethical loungewear, pjs, and undergarments a few days ago! I live for cozy loungewear... especially this time of year! What about you? What’s your coziest piece of clothing? These pajamas were gifted from @thesaltwatercollective
Instagram post 2197399213535439088_2109301417 Contemplating: if I wear loafers in snowy weather, will I regret it? Probably. I’ve had lots of comments on my bare ankles during winter (funny the things people notice 😂), and yes. I do wear shoes without socks sometimes when it’s cold outside. It’s mostly because I like to live on the edge. But it’s also because I live in the Midwest where public transportation to and from the suburbs is sadly not readily available so I drive everywhere. Which means I’m never outside for very long. And, well, I get sweaty feet you guys. So unless I’m outside for awhile I like to let the tootsies breathe. I know. More than you wanted to know. But at least now the sockless feet mystery has been solved.
Instagram post 2196697651834058008_2109301417 I could never capture this serene of a photo now because Gabe is a, erm, very expressive eater (🤣😭) so I’m recycling this photo because I feel like someone needs to hear this: I exclusively pumped with the twins for seven months. When people find that out, usually the response is “That’s great! Good for you!” But you know what? No. It wasn’t great. And it wasn’t good for me. The day I stopped pumping was the day I had a panic attack from just looking at the pump. Pumping was a physical representation of all that I felt I was losing out on with two preemie babies. And it represented my effort to cling to the only thing (I felt) I could exclusively provide for my girls. But I was wrong about all of it. I was losing out on some things, but I was gaining a lot more. And I’m their MAMA. My very existence makes me exclusive in their eyes. I had to let go of the pump to realize that. The anxiety that it caused skewed my thinking, but once I made the decision to walk away I was able to heal from the pain caused by those early postpartum months. My point in saying all of this? We all want what’s best for our babies... and sometimes that means doing what will keep you mentally healthy. I was a much better mother and spouse once we switched to formula. I can’t tell you what’s best for you and your baby, but I can tell you that every baby is different, and every situation is different so you have to do what works for you... and not what worked for your mom, your sister, or your friend. Don’t let one thing have so much power over you. Your worth/success as a mother does not ride on how you fed your baby. It cannot... because regardless of breast or bottle you are MAMA. You are their sun, and their stars. You are their entire world. Don’t forget that.
Instagram post 2196258250834418228_2109301417 Just gave Gabe a bath and then got pooped on while I was cuddling him after. Never fails right! I get asked all of the time how I wear nice clothes with four little ones, and I’m planning to do a more in depth post about it, but my biggest tip? Only wear clothing that can easily be washed. I do wear nice clothing, but nothing that I can’t throw in the washing machine. What’s your biggest hang up when it comes to dressing with young kids? Let me know, and I’ll try to address them in my post!
Instagram post 2195225196753899391_2109301417 Today’s agenda: orange garland, sugar cookies, and wrapping presents. In other words, we’re in full on Holiday mood over here. I’m trying to go the sustainable route this year with Christmas wrapping so I’m using fabric scraps that I’ve been saving up all year. Anyone else have creative gift wrapping ideas? ————————————————
This cozy moment is brought to you courtesy of @everlane I’ll be sharing a roundup of all of my favorite loungewear/pj’s and undergarments on Wednesday so stay tuned for that!
Instagram post 2192324880895178756_2109301417 It’s my second day handling preschool drop off with all the kids, and it went slightly better than last time 😂 Any tips for getting everyone moving in the morning? Fitting in Gabe’s feedings makes it so tricky! I’m loving this combination of cognac, charcoal and navy. It’s such a classic color palette! I’m also realizing that the perfect addition to a neutral wardrobe are pieces with interesting shape/texture. The square toe and textured sweater give this outfit an edge that I really like!
Instagram post 2191604702993624622_2109301417 We’re having a bit of a lazy day around here. All three girls are sick, and Gabe’s a bit crabby after his 2 month shots. Whenever we stay home I’m always so tempted to go into turbo mode and just get all the things done, but entering this Holiday season has reminded me to enjoy down time as much as I can... which means getting better at prioritizing family time over “nice to have done” chores. I like my house to be spotless, but it doesn’t need to be. In the past, I’ve tried to pack in as many things as possible into our day and recently I was reminded that childhood should be filled with lots of empty spaces. So on that note, I’m sharing our teeny tiny Holiday bucket list at the link in my profile. Just the necessities, just the very best traditions.
Instagram post 2191165650842557799_2109301417 Just thought you should know David and I just survived bedtime apocalypse. We’re okay, but it’s gonna take a minute. —————————————————
I’ve almost donated this vintage sweater so many times, but I’m so glad I didn’t. It’s 100% cotton so it’s aged really well and is super soft and cozy. Plus I’ve been really digging the cable knit lately. This is why I put things in clothing “purgatory” before I get rid of them. Maybe this is extreme, but I sit on my decision to donate for at least a year. It’s easy to purge in the heat of a frenzied closet clean out, but giving yourself time to really sit with your decision eliminates the “I got rid of this and now I regret it so I have to purchase a new one” phenomenon. How long do you wait before you donate/sell an item?
Instagram post 2189575889132501121_2109301417 The old adage is true: you get what you pay for. This weekend @mejuri is running their only sale of the year... 10% off one item, 15% off two items, and 20% off three+ items. It’s a great time to add a piece to your collection! Necklace was gifted.
Instagram post 2189491062530229963_2109301417 We drove back from my parents house yesterday. It’s a 7 hour drive normally, but it was made even longer by snow/rainfall. We thought about staying through until Monday, but Gabe has his two month appointment on Monday and I didn’t want to cancel. Spontaneity is a word that’s clearly not in our vocabulary anymore. It worked out well though because we were able to get our tree today, and I don’t know when we would have fit it in otherwise because the first part of our December is already filling up.😭I’m hoping we can take it slow this month, but I know it’s going to take a lot of intentionality on my part. Have you guys mastered the art of a slow Holiday season or do you still struggle like me? P.S. these @everlane drape pants are super comfy for traveling. They’d make the perfect travel pants!
Instagram post 2188863507754143537_2109301417 My baby girl turned 5 yesterday. They say the years go quickly, and they definitely do... I feel like I blinked and we were here. But when I think back on the last 5 years there are these flashes of memory that seem frozen in time... like I’ve been given the gift of that memory forever. Because while it’s all gone so fast, those moments play back in a beautifully slow manner. They are little snippets of Kit. Little experiences we’ve had, things she’s said, moments we’ve gone through. They are her essence, and they are what I’ll remember 20 years from now, 40 years from now, as long as I am breathing I will have these bright spots holding fast in my memory. Kit my dear, you are the most joyful person I know. You are creative, fun, and incredibly kind. I am so thankful that I get to be your mama. Love you bunches Kitty Bug.
