My Daily Routine

My Daily Routine

Hello there! This last week was rough.  Kit’s sleep schedule is WAY out of wack after being in a different time zone for a week.  On top of that I had more late nights than early nights.  That makes one tired mama… and now I’m either battling allergies or a head cold.  Not to complain, but in light of that, I thought I would take a brief break from outfit posts to talk to you about my skincare/makeup routine.  I should start by saying that this is nothing groundbreaking.  For real.  I’m finding though that doing a capsule wardrobe has helped me to minimize the clutter in other areas as well (I talked a bit more about that in THIS blog post)… especially my daily “routine.” When I worked outside of the home I was all about putting on a full face of makeup and doing my hair every single day.  Granted, I worked in an environment where it was important to look nice because I needed to meet with people.  Now that I am a stay at home mom I have no time for that bizz.  Plus, I’m learning that I actually LIKE the way I look with less makeup and more au naturale hair.  There have been a few times in the last couple of months that I put on more makeup like I used to and it just seemed off.  You guys.  This capsule wardrobe thing is literally changing my life.

Before we get into it though let me make a quick comment to those of you lovelies who subscribe to my posts. I’m going to switch from sending you an e-mail every time I post to a weekly digest of my content. Just a heads up in case you were wondering why you didn’t get an email this morning. And if you’re not subscribed, please do! I’ve got some pretty exciting content I have been burning the midnight oil (see above) to create just for my subscribers. I will be sending it out next week and you don’t want to miss it!

Okay. So. Let me break it down for you after this caveat: I try to use organic and natural products as much as possible, but my budget and my skin don’t always agree with that ideal.  I have oily, acne prone, excema prone skin so I use what works.

My AM skincare routine:
AM Skincare

I use Dove soap because it’s great for PH balancing oily skin and then the Magic Pads as a glycolic acid treatment.  I only use the Tea Tree Oil treatment when I’m having breakouts.  I SWEAR by Skin MD.  I have been using it for years and it is the perfect balance of lightweight and calming.  It’s the only product I’ve found that addresses both my redness and my oiliness. Plus, it’s supa cheap.

Tea Tree Oil Treatment

Magic Pads

Dove Soap

Vaseline Lip Therapy

Skin MD Natural Shielding Lotion

My PM routine is even more simple:

PM Skincare

I use the Philosophy face wash as a makeup remover/face wash.  Sometimes it doesn’t quite do the job on my eye makeup so I’ll just use whatever cheap makeup remover towelettes I have on hand.  I’ve been wanting to try the Makeup Eraser though… have any of you tried it?? And again, I SWEAR by the Vitamin E Oil.  I don’t know what it is about this stuff, but it legit clears up my breakups and tightens my pores.  Plus, I use it as an eye treatment as well.  Simple right?

Philosophy Cleanser

Rosewater Toner

Vitamin E Oil

And the grand finale… my simplified makeup routine.  If you know me, you’ll know that this is a fraction of what I used to use.  Can I get a high five?

I think this routine is pretty self explanatory.  Even though I have breakouts I still prefer to use something lighter like this tinted moisturizer.  I find that when I use the higher coverage foundation it just doesn’t look natural on me because of my oily skin.  I prefer to look a little under done than to look over done.  You feel me?

Tinted Moisturizer

Brow Gel

Lip Balm (Apple a Day)

Cheek Tint

Well that’s it for today folks.  Do you have any easy products that you swear by?  I’m always on the lookout for products that will make things easier.  Let me know in the comments below! And don’t forget to subscribe!

Until next time,

My routine is pretty simple. I have used Cetaphil anti bacterial soap to wash my face for years I also use Skin Script products for a toner, scrub/mask and moisturizer. This company is awesome and the products keep my fine lines and wrinkles at bay! 🙂 I use Neutrogena Ultra Sheer SPF 55 for sunblock. After years of running outside I have started to get the sun spots to show for it, so the sunblock keeps any new ones from coming up….better late than never I guess. It is the only sunscreen I have worn that doesn’t make my skin an oily mess! I used to be super simple in my morning and night routine, but now that I’m nearing 40 I spend a little more time cleanings, polishing and moisturizing and think my skin has looked better than it has in years.

Makeup is simple, too. I have used Bare Minerals powder foundation for years, and I still do if I travel, but I also use L’Oreal true match for when I am home. For a drug store brand foundation it is really good. I finish with blush, (Nars) brows and mascara (drugstore cheapies) and lip gloss (Sephora). If I have a more formal event I will wear shadow, liner and lip stick. My makeup literally takes 5 minutes.

Thanks for sharing! I always like to see what others use. 🙂

I have never heard of the Skin Script products… I’ll have to look into those! I actually do use the Neutrogena sunblock as well on the rare days that I don’t use my tinted moisturizer (which includes an SPF). And I also love the Bare Minerals powder foundation, again for the rare occasion I don’t use the tinted moisturizer. Thanks for the tips! I agree that I like to see what others use!

Always a fun topic, Karin! Like Rebecca, I’m at an age where I’ve realized that investing a bit of time and money on my skin is the priority. As a result, it looks better at 41 than it has in a long time. And while I am spending more on skin care, my makeup bag has reached featherweight status so it’s offsetting.

Clarisonic. Totally worthy of the hype. Ole Henriksen The Works Kit. Not cheap, but everything lasts at least two months, apart from the cleanser which lasts three + months. (And I switch to their heavier Vit C moisturizer in the winter.) Laura Mercier concealer because, kids and sleep (ha!) and undereye and spots in one pot and lasts forever. (But spots are very very rare, thank you, Ole.) Highlighter on the inner eyes and cheekbones (currently liking Stila Kitten), mascara (Tarte 4-1 mini all. day. long. for not irritating my sensitive eyes and never flaking), eyeliner, lippie of some variety and done. That’s a huge decrease in the amount of makeup I wear as compared with the past 20 years and I am loving it.

I’m definitely an advocate on spending where it counts the most! I actually do have a Clarisonic, I just always forget to use it. I’m going to pull it out tonight! I’ll have to check out the Ole Henriksen kit and the Laura Mercier concealer. I hear you on the kids and sleep issue. 🙂 Thanks for the tips!!
